DECISION OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE MEMBER STATES, MEETING WITHIN THE COUNCIL

of 16 September 1986

suspending imports of certain iron and steel products originating in South Africa

THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE MEMBER STATES OF THE EUROPEAN COAL AND STEEL COMMUNITY, MEETING WITHIN THE COUNCIL,

In agreement with the Commission,

Whereas the refusal of the Government of the Republic of South Africa to take concrete measures leading to the abolition of apartheid and the deteriorating situation in South Africa have given rise to discussions in the context of European political cooperation which have led, in particular, to the decision that economic measures should be taken with regard to the Republic of South Africa;

Whereas, in these circumstances, it is an appropriate response for the Member States to suspend temporarily imports of the products, set out in the Annex, originating in South Africa;

Whereas import documents issued and contracts concluded before the date of publication of this Decision should not be affected thereby,

HAVE DECIDED AS FOLLOWS:

Article 1

The putting into free circulation in the Community of the products listed in the Annex and originating in South Africa is hereby suspended.

Article 2

This Decision shall not preclude the putting into free circulation of products originating in South Africa:

- accompanied by import documents, issued before the date of publication of this Decision, which mention the Republic of South Africa as the country of origin, or

- to be imported in execution of contracts concluded before that date, or

- in course of shipment to the Community at that date.

Article 3

This Decision shall enter into force on 27 September 1986.
