WRITTEN QUESTION E-0306/99 by David Bowe (PSE) to the Commission (17 February 1999) Subject: Radioactive waste Since the break up of the former Soviet Union, there has been an alarming increase in the number of discoveries of orphan radioactive sources in the EU. These discoveries have often been made by accident. Does the Commission agree that, in order to tackle this problem, efforts should be increased to train border staff and equip borders with detection equipment in order to improve the detection rate?
