EXCHANGE OF LETTERS

concerning clause 2 of the arrangement between the European Economic Community and the Argentine Republic on trade in mutton and lamb

Letter No 1

Sir,

I have the honour to refer to the arrangement in the form of an exchange of letters between the Argentine Republic and the European Economic Community on trade in mutton and lamb, signed on 14 October 1980, and to the Argentine declaration of 23 June 1981. I beg to inform you that the Government of the Argentine Republic will continue to ensure that the marketing of Argentine products in the European Economic Community is carried out in such a way as to avoid any change in the traditional patterns of trade with markets considered to be sensitive, namely France and Ireland.

Accordingly, the relevant authorities in the Argentine Republic guarantee that exports to France and Ireland will be restricted to the following quantities:

- 1985: France: 1 100 tonnes; Ireland: zero

- 1986: France: 1 100 tonnes; Ireland: zero

- 1987: France: 1 100 tonnes; Ireland: zero

The 50 tonnes of sheepmeat exported by Argentina in 1984 in excess of the limit set for France for that year will be deducted by the Argentine authorities from the quantity allowed for 1985.

I also wish to inform you that any change in the circumstances specified in the arrangement referred to in the first subparagraph will nullify the abovementioned undertaking concerning access to sensitive areas.

I should be obliged if you would acknowledge receipt of this letter.

Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of today's date, which reads as follows:
