- Initiative summary:
- The Council of Europe decided to launch negotiations to replace the 1998 Convention on the Protection of the Environment through criminal law. As the Union has exercised its competence in the same area through adoption of the Directive 99/2008/EC on the protection of the environment through criminal law that overlaps largely with the Council of Europe Convention, it has exclusive external competence in this field. The Commission seeks authorisation to represent the common EU position in the negotiations.
