    Declaration of the European Parliament of 15 March 2012 on the establishment of a maximum 8-hour journey limit for animals transported in the European Union for the purpose of being slaughtered

    The European Parliament,

    having regard to Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

    having regard its resolution of 5 May 2010 on the evaluation of the Animal Welfare Action Plan 2006-2010, (1)

    having regard to Rule 123 of its Rules of Procedure,

    A.

    whereas Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 acknowledges in its recitals that ‘the transport of animals over long journeys, including animals for slaughter, should be limited as far as possible’ but still allows very long transports in terms of distance and duration, causing animals severe distress, suffering and even death during such journeys;

    1.

    Notes that the 8hours.eu petition calling for the establishment of a maximum 8-hour journey limit for animals sent for slaughter is supported by nearly one million Europeans;

    2.

    Calls on the Commission and the Council to review Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 to establish a maximum 8-hour limit for the journeys of animals transported for the purpose of being slaughtered;

    3.

    Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the signatories (2), to the Commission and the governments of the Member States.
