1.

On 9 September 2015, the Commission received a notification of a proposed concentration pursuant to Article 4 of Council Regulation (EC) No 139/2004 (1) by which Intel Corporation (‘Intel’, United States of America) acquires within the meaning of Article 3(1)(b) of the Merger Regulation control of Altera Corporation (‘Altera’, United States of America) by way of purchase of shares.

The business activities of the undertakings concerned are:

—   for Intel: designs and manufactures computing and communications components, such as microprocessors (also known as CPUs), chipsets, motherboards, and wireless and wired connectivity products, as well as platforms that incorporate these components;

—   for Altera: design and sale of a variety of semiconductor products, including programmable logic devices (‘PLDs’), a product category that includes both field-programmable gate arrays (‘FPGAs’) and complex programmable logic devices (‘CPLDs’).

On preliminary examination, the Commission finds that the notified transaction could fall within the scope of the Merger Regulation. However, the final decision on this point is reserved.

The Commission invites interested third parties to submit their possible observations on the proposed operation to the Commission.
