Subject: Electronic scrap

1. (a) Does the Commission know whether the industry is planning voluntary agreements?

(b) What is the Commission's assessment of them?

2. How would the Commission view an arrangement combining voluntary commitments and legally binding framework conditions?

Answer given by Mrs Bjerregaard on behalf of the Commission (1 August 1997)

1. Waste from electrical and electronic equipment is covered by the Community legislation on waste.

The Commission does not have of information on voluntary agreements in the field of electronic waste.

2. The Commission opinion on voluntary commitments is reflected in its communication of 27 November 1996 ((COM(96) 561. )). This communication contains guidelines for the preparation of voluntary agreements. On 17 July 1997 the Parliament adopted a Resolution on this communication.
