Objective: Promotion of projects concerning research and technological development, environmental protection and training, the main objective being to improve safety

Legal basis: Council Regulation (EC) No 1407/2002 of 23 July 2002(1) on State aid to the coal industry which allows Community aid schemes for research and development, environmental protection and training, namely:

- Community framework for State aid to research and development (Communication 96/C 45/06 of 17 February 1996(2), as amended by Communication 98/C 48/02 of 15 February 1998(3) and Communication 2002/C 111/03 of 8 May 2002(4)),

- Community Directives on State aid for environmental protection (Communication 2001/C 37/03 of 3 February 2001(5)),

- Commission Regulation (EC) No 68/2001 of 12 January 2001 applying Articles 87 and 88 of the EC Treaty to training aid(6)

Budget: EUR 1 million per annum

Aid intensity or amount: No individual aid may exceed EUR 300000

Duration: Three years (2002, 2003 and 2004)

Other information: Spain must ensure that the aid is used by the companies in question only for the purposes for which it has been authorised, while avoiding any use of this aid under Articles 4, 5 and 7 of Council Regulation (EC) No 1407/2002
