Proposal for a Council Regulation authorizing Portugal to grant aid to sugar beet producers and abolish all such aid from the 2001/02 marketing year (COM(97)0412 - C4-0457/97 - 97/0222(CNS))

The proposal was approved with the following amendment:

Article 2

With effect from the 2001/02 marketing year, the aid referred to in Article 1 and the aids referred to in Article 46 of Council Regulation (EEC) No 1785/81 are hereby abolished.

Before the end of the marketing year 2000/01, the Commission shall submit to the Council and the European Parliament a report on the operation of the national aids system referred to in Article 1 of this Regulation and Article 46 of Regulation (EEC) No 1785/81, together with the appropriate measures.

(Consultation procedure)

The European Parliament,

- having regard to the Commission proposal to the Council, COM(97)0412 - 97/0222(CNS) ((OJ C 263, 29.8.1997, p. 12.)),

- having been consulted by the Council pursuant to Article 43 of the EC Treaty (C4-0457/97),

- having regard to Rule 58 of its Rules of Procedure,

- having regard to the report of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (A4-0330/97),

1. Approves the Commission proposal, subject to Parliament's amendments;

2. Calls on the Council to notify Parliament should it intend to depart from the text approved by Parliament;

3. Asks to be consulted again should the Council intend to make substantial modifications to the Commission proposal;

4. Instructs its President to forward this opinion to the Council and Commission.
