The following spoke: Struan Stevenson, who – in the light of recent disquieting news about Iran in the international press – called on the Conference of Presidents to cancel the visit to Tehran by a Parliament delegation. The following spoke: Potito Salatto, who supported this request (the President took note of it).

2.   Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting

The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.

Gaston Franco said that he had been present at the sitting of 26 September 2011 but his name did not appear in the record of attendance.

3.   Welcome

On behalf of Parliament, the President welcomed Mr Kabbani, Mr Bazzi and Mr Pakradouinian, a delegation from the Lebanese Parliament, who had taken their seats in the distinguished visitors’ gallery.

4.   Statements by the President

The President welcomed the gradual stabilisation of the situation in Libya but expressed concern about the humanitarian situation facing refugees and displaced persons. He also welcomed the first free elections in Tunisia and announced that he would be visiting these countries in the next few weeks.

He also expressed concern about the situation in Egypt, particularly the outbreaks of violence and the threats to the security of religious minorities.

The President condemned the brutal repression being carried out by the regimes in Yemen and Syria and called on the international community to express its opposition to this repression and support democratic change in these countries.

The President expressed concern about the politically motivated sentence of seven years in prison handed down to Yulia Timoshenko, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine.

10.   Composition of Parliament

Lena Ek announced her appointment to the Swedish Government.

In accordance with Rule 4(1) and (3), Parliament noted her resignation and established her seat was vacant with effect from 29 September 2011.

Under Article 13(4) of the Act concerning the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage, Parliament asked the Swedish national authorities concerned to forward the name of the person who would occupy the seat that had become vacant.

11.   Situation in Palestine (written declaration)

The President announced that written declaration 0027/2011 on recognition by the European Union of the Palestinian State had become superfluous following the adoption of the European Parliament resolution of 29 September 2011 on the situation in Palestine (P7_TA-PROV(2011)0429) and had been withdrawn by its authors.
