Tractors and agricultural or forestry machinery: components and characteristics

The European Union is technical requirements of tractors in all Member States.

ACT

Council Directive 89/173/EEC of 21 December 1988 concerning the approximation of the laws of Member States relating to certain components and characteristics of wheeled agricultural or forestry tractors [See amending acts].

SUMMARY

The Directive applies only to tractors which are fitted with pneumatic tyres and have a maximum speed of between 6 and 40 km/h.

No Member State may not refuse EC-type-approval or national type-approval of a tractor, or refuse its registration or prohibit the sale, entry into service or use of a tractor if it complies with the provisions of the Directive.

Any amendments necessary to adapt the annexes to technical progress are to be adopted in conformity with the procedure laid down in Directive 74/150/EEC which was repealed and replaced by Directive 2003/37/EC.

The annexes contain detailed technical requirements including minimum safety margins, weights and dimensions, requirements for the main components and characteristics of tractors (brakes, engine stopping device, windscreen, etc.).
