Resolution on the proposal for a Council Directive on the collection of statistical information in the field of tourism (COM(94)0582 - C4-0176/95)

The European Parliament,

- having regard to the Commission proposal, COM(94)0582 - C4-0176/95 ((OJ C 35, 11.2.1995, p. 5.)),

- having delegated the power of decision, pursuant to Rule 52 of its Rules of Procedure, to the Committee on Transport and Tourism,

- having regard to the report of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the opinion of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and Industrial Policy (A4-0139/95),

A. whereas the Commission has forwarded to Parliament, for information, its proposal for a Council Directive on the collection of statistical information in the field of tourism,

1. Invites the Commission to take into consideration the following proposed modifications:

2. For the characteristics with annual and monthly periodicity, the first period of observation shall begin on 1 January 1996. For the characteristics relating to the columns on quarterly data in section C of the annex, the first observation period shall begin on 1 January 1997.

The results shall be disseminated by the Commission. Specific measures necessary to ensure widespread dissemination by the national authorities may be laid down in accordance with the procedure specified in Article 12.

The results shall be disseminated by the Commission. The information shall be accessible to all users. The Commission shall check the accuracy of the information provided and that the Member States have fulfilled their obligations, and shall submit a report to the Council and the European Parliament. Specific measures necessary to ensure widespread dissemination by the national authorities may be laid down in accordance with procedures specified in Article 12.

1. Without prejudice to Article 13, the Member States shall take all the measures necessary to make the Community information system operational during a transition period, which shall end three years after entry into force of the present Directive for monthly and annual data, and shall end in five years after entry into force of the present Directive for quarterly data.

Article 10a

During the transitional period, the Community shall contribute towards the costs incurred by the national statistical services in making the required changes to their systems. This provision shall also apply, pro rata, to the new Member States.

2. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission and Council.
