Subject: Animal welfare

Will the Commission take steps to produce a green paper on animal welfare in the Union?

Answer given by Mr Fischler on behalf of the Commission (15 September 1997)

The Commission has been working towards achieving an improvement of animal welfare in various sectors. For that purpose, it has adopted a number of provisions and it will continue to do so, where necessary. On the other hand, the Commission has no plans at present to issue a green paper on the subject.
