1. Resumption of the session
The sitting opened at 17.05.
2. Statements by the President
The President made a statement on the occasion of the Sixth International Day Against Homophobia.
The President referred to Europe Day and Parliament’s Open Days, which had seen over 33 000 visitors in Strasbourg and Brussels on 8 and 9 May 2010.
The President informed the House that he had been present in Aachen on 13 May when Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had been awarded the Charlemagne Prize. He had also attended the ceremony for the award of the European Charlemagne Youth Prize to a German project on 11 May 2010.
The President pointed out that he had taken part in the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments in Stockholm from 13 to 15 May 2010.
The President mentioned the recent general elections in Hungary and the United Kingdom.
3. Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting
The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.

The following spoke: Mario Mauro and Gianni Pittella, who pointed out that two Italian soldiers had been killed that day in an attack near Herat in Afghanistan; Geoffrey Van Orden, who echoed the sentiments expressed by the two previous speakers and went on to highlight the role of British soldiers involved in NATO’s mission in Afghanistan; and Jacky Hénin, who mentioned the victims of accidents at work.
The President paid tribute to all the European soldiers fighting terrorism and violence in Afghanistan and throughout the world.
4. Calendar of part-sessions for 2011
The Conference of Presidents had presented its proposal for the calendar of part-sessions for 2011.

6. Composition of Parliament
Zoltán Balczó and Pál Schmitt had given written notice of the end of their mandate as Members of the European Parliament arising from their election to the Hungarian Parliament.
Parliament took note and, in accordance with Article 7(2) of the Act concerning the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage and Rule 4(4), second subparagraph, of the Rules of Procedure, established that their seats had become vacant with effect from 14 May 2010.

Parliament agreed to the request; the vote would be taken at noon on Wednesday. Request by the PPE Group with a view to taking a vote on the proposal for a decision in Ryszard Czarnecki’s report on discharge in respect of the implementation of the European Union general budget for the financial year 2008, Section II – Council (A7-0096/2010) during voting time on Wednesday.
