‘Île-de-France’ protected geographical indication
The ‘Île-de-France’ protected geographical indication covers still red, rosé and white wines.
The still red wines are mostly cherry red in colour, with predominantly fruity primary aromas that vary in intensity depending on the grape varieties, slight acidity and subtle smoky notes.
The still white and rosé wines have predominantly floral and fruity primary aromas that vary in intensity depending on the grape varieties, and a perceptible and balanced liveliness and minerality. The white wines usually have pale yellow shades with green tints and can sometimes be more golden in colour after they have been aged for a year. The rosé wines have mostly salmon-pink shades.
The wines meet the analytical criteria laid down in EU legislation.

9. Description of the link(s)
The geographical territory where the demarcated geographical area for the production of grapes eligible for the production of ‘Île-de-France’ PGI wines is located covers almost the entirety of the ‘last plate’ from the Cenozoic in the famous ‘stacked plates’ morphology of the geological strata in the vast Paris sedimentary basin.
The causal link between the geographical area and the products is based on the specific quality of the organoleptic properties attributable to the geographical origin, in particular the influence of climate and soil.
The climate in the geographical territory and particularly in the demarcated geographical area for the ‘Île-de-France’ PGI has the effect of creating a typically cool mesoclimate between the rows of vines. Temperatures rise slowly in the morning and more quickly in the afternoon, slowly dropping below 14 oC at night, especially during the grape ripening season. Depending on the grape varieties, this results in harmonious and specific development of the acidity and minerality, as well as of the precursors of the varietal aromas.
The clay-limestone soils, with their sand and silt content, high pH and good cation exchange capacity, have the effect of reinforcing these organoleptic particularities.
The still red wines have predominantly fruity primary aromas that vary in intensity depending on the grape varieties, slight acidity and subtle smoky notes which are linked to the limestone substrates and their sand content, and to the rainfall pattern that is characteristic in the geographical area in the grape-ripening season.
The still white and rosé wines have predominantly floral and fruity primary aromas that vary in intensity depending on the grape varieties. Their perceptible and balanced liveliness and minerality is linked to the presence of sand and silt on and in the limestone substrate where the vines have their roots, as well as to the cool nights specific to the production area in springtime, between the inception of veraison and the ripening of the grapes.
Although diverse vine varieties are grown, priority is given to those that are adapted to northern regions, with a view to ensuring optimal ripening. The winegrowers have gradually enriched their native vine varieties with varieties from elsewhere, in a bid to achieve the best adaptation to the characteristics of the soil, the constraints of the climate and the physiological characteristics of the varieties themselves.
The organoleptic expression of the varieties grown in the homogeneous territory of the ‘Île-de-France’ PGI is profoundly influenced by the sand and silt in the high pH clay-limestone soils, which have good cation exchange capacity and drainage - thus allowing deep roots to form - and by the typically cool mesoclimate. The resulting wines have a perceptible and balanced liveliness and minerality, with predominantly fruity and floral primary aromas and subtle smoky notes.
Winegrowing has developed in this region since the 1960s. The local press has been using the term ‘vins franciliens’ (wines from the Île-de-France region) as well as ‘vins d’Île-de-France’ since the late 1990s. The local festivities organised to coincide with the harvest, the participation in educational initiatives, the inclusion of a wine route in a hiking guide to the Île-de-France region and the fifteen entries in the Salon International de l’Agriculture since 2001 (at which the signatures of over 6 000 people that tasted the wines were collected) have clearly established the link between these two terms, thus enhancing the reputation of the wines among the inhabitants of the Île-de-France region, who are increasingly appreciative of certifiably local quality products. The visual communication also helps to link the name to the tradition of winegrowing in the Île-de-France region down through history, while also drawing attention to the homogeneous soil and climate in the territory and the effect this has on the wines produced there.
