Minutes of the sitting of 8 May 2023

    IN THE CHAIR: Roberta METSOLA

    President

    1.   Resumption of the session

The session adjourned on Thursday 20 April 2023 was resumed.

    2.   Opening of the sitting

    The sitting opened at 17.03.

    3.   Statements by the President

The President made a statement in which she criticised the sanctions that the Iranian regime had imposed since the previous part-session. She repeated that no threats, sanctions or attempts at intimidation would ever prevent Parliament from making its voice heard in support of women, life and freedom in Iran. While expressing Parliament's solidarity with the Iranian people, she referred to the execution of a Swedish Iranian national in Iran the weekend before and called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, including Professor Ahmad Reza Jalali.

The President said that, the week before, on World Press Freedom Day, Parliament had launched its third edition of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism — a prize that rewards outstanding journalism in defence of the European Union's core values. In that context, she referred to the case of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was still detained in Russia, and she reiterated her call for his safe release, stressing that journalists must be able to do their job without fearing for their lives or their freedom.

The President raised the two deadly shootings in Serbia the week before. She called for the perpetrators of these indiscriminate attacks to be brought to justice. On Parliament's behalf, she extended sincere condolences to the families and friends of all the victims.

Parliament observed a minute's silence in memory of the victims.

    5.   Composition of Parliament

The Greek authorities had given notice of the election of Nikos Papandreou to replace Nikos Androulakis as Member of Parliament with effect from 3 May 2023.

Parliament took note of his election.

Under Rule 3(2), until such time as his credentials had been verified or a ruling had been given on any dispute, and provided that he had previously made a written declaration stating that he did not hold any office incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Nikos Papandreou would take his seat in Parliament and on its bodies and would enjoy all the rights attaching thereto.

    6.   Composition of committees and delegations

The S&D and The Left groups had notified the President of the following decisions changing the composition of the committees and delegations:
