The list of varieties is due to the very rapid growth in the varieties of peaches and nectarines and is necessary to meet both agronomic and cultivation requirements and quality requirements.

    4.3.   Geographical area:

The production area of the Pesca di Romagna covers the part of the Region of Emiglia-Romagna suitable for growing peaches and is made up as follows:

Province of Ferrara: the municipalities of Argenta, Cento, Codigoro, Massa Fiscaglia, Poggio Renatico, Portomaggiore, S. Agostino, Tresigallo, Voghiera.

Province of Bologna: the municipalities of Borgo Tossignano, Budrio, Casalfiumanese, Castelguelfo, Castenaso, Fontanelice, Granarolo dell’Emilia, Imola, Medicina, Minerbio, Molinella, Mordano.

Province of Forlì: the muncipalities of Bertinoro, Castrocaro Terme, Cesena, Cesenatico, Dovadola, Forlì, Forlimpopoli, Gambettola, Gatteo, Longiano, Meldola, Mercato Saraceno, Modigliaria, Montiano, Predappio, Roncofreddo, Sant’Arcangelo, Savignano sul Rubicone.

Province of Ravenna: the municipalities of Alfonsine, Bagnacavallo, Bagnara di Romagna, BrisigneIla, Casola Valsenio, Castelbolognese, Cervia, Conselice, Cotignola, Faenza, Fusignano, Lugo, Massalombarda, Ravenna, Riolo Terme, Russi, S.Agata sul Santerno, Solarolo.

    4.4.   Proof of origin:

Each stage in the production process is monitored, with all inputs and outputs recorded. Together with the compilation of specific registers, managed by the inspection body, of producers and packers, and timely notification to the inspection body of the quantities produced, this ensures product traceability. All operators, whether legal or natural persons, registered in the relevant lists are subject to checks by the inspection body.

    4.5.   Method of production:

The Pesca and Nettarina di Romagna PGI must be produced using traditional and environmentally-friendly techniques. The size of the trees must be determined with a view to obtaining products of high quality. There must be at least three harvests without damaging the fruit. The maximum limits are 2 000 trees/ha, yield is 35 000 kg per hectare for the peach and the nectarine. That yield is correlated to the fact that the characteristics of the variety and the agronomic practices applied to the peaches and the nectarines are very similar, and allows uniformity of yield without compromising the quality of production. The pruning shapes are: palmette, spindle, vase and funnel.

    4.6.   Link:

The features of the soil and climate and the skills of the growers in the production area result in peaches and nectarines with special physical and chemical and organoleptic qualities which are sold on the national and European market as typical produce of Emilia Romagna. The production area has a typical plains climate but is influenced by the proximity of the Adriatic Sea. The production area is the part of the region which has the highest average temperature, with almost no spring frosts which could damage the fruit. The importance of the production of the Pesca di Romagna and Netterina di Romagna is linked not only to the objective and optimum soil and climate conditions but also to the social and productive fabric of the area capable of utilising those resources and turning to account the fruits of the earth and labour. In the area of cultivation of the Pesca di Romagna and Nettarina di Romagna there are many producers’ associations which, thanks to their organisational capacity, have set up product collection centres in the area using cutting-edge technology. The area is so suitable for the production of peaches and nectarines that it accounts for approximately one quarter of total production of the fruit in Italy.
