WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE AGREEMENT AND THE DECISIONS?

The framework agreement aims to:

• strengthen the partnership between the parties;
• deepen and enhance cooperation on issues of mutual interest while reflecting shared values and common principles.

Decision 2014/229/EU of 27 October 2009 authorised the signing of the agreement on behalf of the European Union (EU).

Decision 2014/230/EU and Decision 2014/231/EU concluded the agreement on behalf of the EU.

KEY POINTS

The agreement covers various areas of cooperation:

• peace and security, with particular emphasis on combating:
  • the proliferation and delivery of weapons of mass destruction,
  • terrorism;
• cooperation in regional and international organisations such as the United Nations, the Association of South-East Asian Nations and the World Trade Organization;
• bilateral and regional cooperation;
• trade and investment issues, including:
  • trade development and technical barriers to trade,
  • protection of intellectual property rights,
  • competition policy;
• justice, focusing on several issues, including:
  • combating organised crime and corruption,
  • combating money laundering,
  • illicit drugs;
• socioeconomic development, with cooperation on issues such as:
  • migration,
  • human rights,
  • health,
  • the environment and natural resources.

A joint committee, with representatives from both parties, oversees the implementation of the agreement and the fulfilment of its objectives.

DATE OF ENTRY INTO FORCE

The agreement will enter into force once it is ratified by the EU Member States and concluded by the EU, and ratified by Indonesia.
