of 3 February 2022
on the activation of the European Union military operation to contribute to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast (Atalanta)’s secondary executive task of contributing to countering narcotic drugs trafficking off the coast of Somalia (ATALANTA/2/2022)
THE POLITICAL AND SECURITY COMMITTEE,
Having regard to the Treaty on European Union, and in particular Article 38 thereof,
Having regard to Council Joint Action 2008/851/CFSP of 10 November 2008 on a European Union military operation to contribute to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the coast of Somalia (1), and in particular Article 2b thereof,
Whereas:

On 22 December 2020, the Council adopted Decision (CFSP) 2020/2188 (2), which amended Joint Action 2008/851/CFSP and gave the European Union military operation to contribute to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the coast of Somalia (Atalanta), inter alia, the secondary executive task of contributing to countering narcotic drugs trafficking off the coast of Somalia (the ‘secondary executive task’). |

Article 2b(3) of Joint Action 2008/851/CFSP provides that the Political and Security Committee is to activate the secondary executive task when the EU Operation Commander reports that Atalanta disposes of the necessary assets to carry out the tasks referred to in that Article. |

The EU Operation Commander has reported that Atalanta disposes of the necessary assets to carry out the secondary executive task. |

(4) |
The secondary executive task should be activated with immediate effect, |
HAS ADOPTED THIS DECISION:
Article 1
The secondary executive task of contributing to countering narcotic drugs trafficking off the coast of Somalia, given to Atalanta by means of Article 2b of Joint Action 2008/851/CFSP, is hereby activated.
Article 2
This Decision shall enter into force on the date of its adoption.
