COUNCIL DECISION (CFSP) 2020/471

of 31 March 2020

repealing Decision (CFSP) 2015/778 on a European Union military operation in the Southern Central Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA)

THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION,

Having regard to the Treaty on European Union, and in particular Articles 42(4) and 43(2) thereof,

Having regard to the proposal from the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,

Whereas:

(1)

On 18 May 2015, the Council adopted Decision (CFSP) 2015/778 (1).

(2)

On 26 September 2019, the Council extended Decision (CFSP) 2015/778 until 31 March 2020 through Decision (CFSP) 2019/1595 (2).

(3)

On 17 February 2020, the Council agreed that EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA should be closed. Decision (CFSP) 2015/778 should therefore be repealed and EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA will consequently end upon such repeal.

(4)

Council Decision (CFSP) 2015/528 (3) establishing a mechanism to administer the financing of the common costs of European Union operations having military or defence implications (Athena) determines the procedures for the audit and presentation of the accounts of the operation,

HAS ADOPTED THIS DECISION:

Article 1

1.   Decision (CFSP) 2015/778 is hereby repealed.

2.   The repeal of Decision (CFSP) 2015/778 shall be without prejudice to the procedures laid down in Decision (CFSP) 2015/528 regarding the audit and presentation of the accounts of EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA.

Article 2

This Decision shall enter into force on the date of its adoption.
