Data protection in the Community: the European Commission is seeking views about the implementation of privacy legislation

    (2002/C 150/05)

The European Commission is currently preparing its first report on the implementation of the Data Protection Directive(1) and has launched a broad consultation exercise. Contributions consisting of experiences with implementation, best/worst practice, and/or ideas for improvements/simplification would be of particular interest. The results will be reported to a Conference which the Commission is organising in Brussels on 30 September and 1 October 2002.

There are two options for making a contribution:

    1. For short contributions you can use one of the two questionnaires on http://europa.eu.int/yourvoice. One of these is designed for individuals and the other for businesses that process people's data. Most of the questions are multiple choice, but there are some opportunities to provide free text as well. Completed questionnaires are automatically available to the Commission via the Internet. This option can be used up to 15 September.

    2. For more detailed comments, for example from organisations representing business or consumers, please send your position papers to either of the following addresses: MARKT-A-4@cec.eu.int European Commission DG Internal Market

    Data Protection Unit

    C-100 6/14

    B - 1049 Brussels.

If possible option 2 contributions (which will take longer to analyse) should reach the Commission by 31 July. Contributions may be made up to 31 August, but (depending on the volume of contributions received) the Commission cannot undertake to include in its analysis for the conference contributions received in August.
