    COMMON POSITION of 8 December 1997 defined by the Council on the basis of Article J.2 of the Treaty on European Union, concerning Sierra Leone (97/826/CFSP)

    THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION,

    Having regard to the Treaty on European Union, and in particular Article J.2 thereof,

    Whereas, on 8 October 1997, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1132 (1997) in which it demanded that the military junta in Sierra Leone take immediate steps to relinquish power and make way for the restoration of the democratically-elected Government and a return to constitutional order; whereas that Resolution should be implemented throughout the European Union, under the conditions set out therein, in particular in respect of the duration of the measures taken,

    HAS DEFINED THIS COMMON POSITION:

    Article 1

    The Member States will, in accordance with their national laws, prevent the entry into or transit through their territories of all members of the military junta and adult members of their families.

    Nothing in the first paragraph will oblige a Member State to refuse entry into its territory to its own nationals.

    The persons concerned by this measure will be designated in accordance with paragraphs 5 and 10(f) of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1132 (1997), an exception being made for persons whose presence may be authorized under paragraph 5 of the Resolution, particularly on verified humanitarian grounds.

    Article 2

    An embargo on arms and related material of all types, including weapons and ammunition, military vehicles and equipment, paramilitary equipment and spare parts for the aforementioned will be imposed on Sierra Leone in accordance with paragraph 6 of Resolution 1132 (1997).

    Article 3

    Economic relations and contacts with Sierra Leone will be reduced in accordance with Resolution 1132 (1997).

    Article 4

    This Common Position shall take effect on 8 December 1997.

    Article 5

    This Common Position shall be published in the Official Journal.
