1.   Resumption of the session

The sitting opened at 15.00.

2.   Statement by the President

The President made a statement on the tragedy that had occurred recently when a number of boats carrying migrants had been lost at sea off the coast of Libya.

Parliament observed a minute's silence in memory of the victims.

3.   Welcome

On behalf of Parliament, the President welcomed Professor Luc Montagnier, recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine, who had taken a seat in the distinguished visitors' gallery.

On behalf of Parliament, the President welcomed members of a delegation from the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States, who had taken their seats in the distinguished visitors' gallery.

4.   Approval of the Minutes of the previous sitting

The Minutes of the previous sitting were approved.

5.   Composition of Parliament

The Spanish authorities had given notice of the election to the European Parliament of Daniel Bautista to replace Daniel Varela Suanzes-Carpegna, pursuant to Rule 4(1). Parliament took note with effect from 26 March 2009.

Under Rule 3(2), until such time as his credentials had been verified or a ruling had been given on any dispute, and provided that he had previously made a written declaration stating that he did not hold any office incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Daniel Bautista would take his seat in Parliament and on its bodies and would enjoy all the rights attaching thereto.

6.   Composition of committees and delegations

The President had received the following requests for appointments from the PPE-DE Group:
