Publication of a Vacancy for Executive Director of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki (Grade AD 15)

(2007/C 29 A/01)

The REACH Regulation, which will enter into force on 1 June 2007, will establish a new regulatory framework for chemical substances in the European Union. At the heart of REACH is the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), to be set up in Helsinki, Finland. The ECHA will be responsible for managing technical, scientific and administrative aspects of REACH, and ensuring consistency in its application. It will provide the Member States and the EU institutions with the best possible scientific and technical advice on chemicals issues.

For the post of Executive Director, the Commission seeks candidates with the capacity to lead a major EU regulatory agency in its key early years and steer it through the scientific, technical and organisational challenges of establishing a complex regulatory process in a field that is politically sensitive and crucial to human health, the environment, economic competitiveness and innovation. Candidates should combine solid management experience with leadership in relevant scientific or technical fields.

The Executive Director will be appointed by the Management Board of the Agency from a list of candidates selected by the European Commission. He/she will be appointed as a member of the temporary staff at grade AD 15 pursuant to Article 2a of the Conditions of Employment of Other Servants of the European Communities for a period of five years that may be extended once for a further period of up to five years.
