Publication of a communication of approval of a standard amendment to a product specification for a name in the wine sector referred to in Article 17(2) and (3) of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/33
(2023/C 300/08)
This communication is published in accordance with Article 17(5) of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/33 (1).
COMMUNICATING THE APPROVAL OF A STANDARD AMENDMENT
‘Côtes du Rhône’
PDO-FR-A0325-AM04
Date of communication: 27.6.2023
DESCRIPTION OF AND REASONS FOR THE APPROVED AMENDMENT
1. Areas and places in which the various operations are conducted
A reference to the Official Geographic Code, which recognises and lists the municipalities by department at national level, has been inserted in Section IV ‘Geographical area and area in immediate proximity’ of Chapter I of the specification. This editorial amendment allows the geographical area to be identified with reference to the 2022 version of the Official Geographic Code, which is updated by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), and gives the definition of the geographical area legal certainty.
The municipality of Montfaucon has been moved from the area in immediate proximity to the geographical area.
The single document is amended under the point ‘Geographical area’ and ‘Further conditions – area in immediate proximity’.
2. Vineyard management
Agri-environmental provisions aimed at preserving the characteristics of the physical and biological environment have been inserted in Section VI ‘Vineyard management’, point 2 ‘Other growing methods’ of Chapter I of the specification. The provisions in question relate to weeding, plastic mulching and soil preservation practices.
The single document is amended under the point ‘Wine-making practices’.
3. Declaration requirements - Claim declaration
The date for submitting to the protection and management body the claim declaration for the volumes produced has been set out by means of an amendment to Section I ‘Declaration requirements’, point 1 ‘Claim declaration’ of Chapter II of the specification for the ‘Côtes du Rhône’ controlled designation of origin.
This addition does not affect the single document.
4. Arrangements for checking compliance with the specification
A reference to checks on compliance with the product specification under the authority of the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO) on the basis of an approved control plan has been inserted by means of an amendment to Section II ‘References to the inspection body’ of Chapter III of the specification for the ‘Côtes du Rhône’ controlled designation of origin.
This addition does not affect the single document.

Wine
BRIEF WRITTEN DESCRIPTION
Still dry wines (fermentable sugar content <= 4g/l). The red wines are fruity, generous, with good colour intensity. They may be stored for varying lengths of time depending on the soil types and blend of varieties decided on through producers’ know-how. The rosé wines, which are fruity or floral, very quickly built up a reputation in certain sectors. The white wines are floral and round on the palate, sometimes with exotic notes. Minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume: 10,5 %. After enrichment the wines have a total alcoholic strength by volume of <=13 %. Red wines: malic acid content <= 0,4 g/l.
The other analytical criteria are in line with the limits laid down in EU legislation.

5. Wine-making practices
5.1. Specific oenological practices
1. Spacing between rows and plants
Cultivation method
The distance between the rows is ≤ 2,50 m. The area available for each plant must not exceed 2,50 m2. The spacing between plants in the same row ranges from 0,80 metres to 1,25 metres.
2. Pruning of the vine
Cultivation method
The vines are pruned with a maximum of six spurs per plant. Each spur has a maximum of two buds. It takes a maximum of 2 years for a spur to establish. Pruning is identical to the Viognier B.
The Viognier B variety may either be pruned with a maximum of eight buds on the cane and one or two spurs with a maximum of two buds, or it may be pruned with a maximum of six buds on each cane and one or two spurs with a maximum of two buds.
3. Irrigation
Cultivation method
Irrigation may be authorised.
4. Method of preserving the characteristics of the physical and biological environment of the terroir
Cultivation method
To preserve the characteristics of the physical and biological environment, which is a fundamental part of the terroir:
— |
chemical weed control is prohibited on headlands; |
— |
chemical weed control on more than 50 % of the vineyard surface, headlands not included, is prohibited; |
— |
plastic mulching is prohibited; |
— |
no substantial alterations may be made to the shape and contours of the landscape or the natural pedological sequence of parcels intended for production of the controlled designation of origin. |
5. Enrichment
Specific oenological practice
Subtractive enrichment techniques are permitted for the red wines with a limit of a 10 % concentration rate.
To produce the rosé wines, winemakers are permitted to use oenological charcoal exclusively on press musts without exceeding 20 % of the total volume made into wine by the operator for that harvest.
5.2. Maximum yields
1. |
Wines 60 hectolitres per hectare |

8. Description of the link(s)
The vineyards are located along the sillon rhodanien (furrow of the Rhone). The climate is affected by the Mistral, a northerly wind which always has a drying effect. This protects the vines from cryptogamic attacks and at the same time ensures significant sunshine and a suitable amount of rainfall. The resulting red wines are fruity, generous, have good colour intensity and may be stored for varying lengths of time depending on the soil types and blend of varieties. The resulting rosé wines are fruity and sometimes floral, whilst the white wines are floral, round on the palate, sometimes with exotic notes. Producers’ expert knowledge of the local area and regional climate give wines with the ‘Côtes du Rhône’ designation their identity and reputation.
