New national side of euro coins intended for circulation

National side of the new commemorative 2-euro coin intended for circulation and issued by Germany

Euro coins intended for circulation have legal tender status throughout the euro area. For the purpose of informing the public and all parties who handle the coins, the Commission publishes a description of the designs of all new coins (1). In accordance with the Council conclusions of 10 February 2009 (2), euro-area Member States and countries that have concluded a monetary agreement with the Community providing for the issuing of euro coins are allowed to issue commemorative euro coins intended for circulation, provided that certain conditions are met, particularly that only the 2-euro denomination is used. These coins have the same technical characteristics as other 2-euro coins, but their national face features a commemorative design that is highly symbolic in national or European terms.

Issuing country: Germany

Subject of commemoration: Baden-Württemberg from the ‘Lander’-series

Description of the design: The inner part of the coin depicts the Maulbronn Monastery which is home to the most perfectly preserved medieval monastery complex north of the Alps. Founded in 1147, this complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. On the top, the year of issuance ‘2013’. At the bottom, the inscription BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG and underneath the indication of the issuing country ‘D’. The mint mark, represented by the letter A, D, F, G or J, is located at the right hand side. At the bottom left the initials of the artist.

The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Number of coins to be issued: 30 million

Description of the design: The inner part of the design shows a continuing ribbon that starts from the outside depicting the effigy of King Willem-Alexander and continues to depict the effigies of his six predecessors: Queen Beatrix, Queen Juliana, Queen Wilhelmina, King Willem III, King Willem II and King Willem I. The effigies are surrounded by the inscription ‘Willem-Alexander Koning der Nederlanden’ followed by the Royal Dutch mintmark, the mint master mark, the year 2013, the initials of the designer and at the left side of the effigies the inscription ‘200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden’.

The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Number of coins to be issued: 3,5 million

Prior notification of a concentration

Candidate case for simplified procedure

On 16 December 2013, the Commission received a notification of a proposed concentration pursuant to Article 4 of Council Regulation (EC) No 139/2004 (1) by which VR Equitypartner GmbH (‘VREP’, Germany) and Süd-Kapital-Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbh (‘SUDKB’, Germany) acquire, within the meaning of Article 3(1)(b) of the Merger Regulation, joint control of Duo Plast AG, Germany (‘Duo Plast’), by way of purchase of shares.

The business activities of the undertakings concerned are:

—	for VREP: private equity investment firm financing especially small and medium-sized businesses,

—	for SUDKB: private investment firm focusing on investments in expanding medium-sized companies active in Germany,

—	for Duo Plast: production of plastic films for packaging.

On preliminary examination, the Commission finds that the notified transaction could fall within the scope of the EC Merger Regulation. However, the final decision on this point is reserved. Pursuant to the Commission Notice on a simplified procedure for treatment of certain concentrations under the EC Merger Regulation (2) it should be noted that this case is a candidate for treatment under the procedure set out in the Notice.

The Commission invites interested third parties to submit their possible observations on the proposed operation to the Commission.

Observations must reach the Commission not later than 10 days following the date of this publication.
