Prior notification of a concentration

(Case COMP/M.5421 — Panasonic/Sanyo)

On 11 August 2009, the Commission received a notification of a proposed concentration pursuant to Article 4 of Council Regulation (EC) No 139/2004 (1) by which the undertaking Panasonic Corporation (‘Panasonic’, Japan) acquires within the meaning of Article 3(1)(b) of the Council Regulation control of the whole of the undertaking Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (‘Sanyo’, Japan) by way of public bid.


The business activities of the undertakings concerned are:

for Panasonic: development, manufacture and sale of audiovisual and communication products, home appliances, electronic components and devices (including batteries), industrial and other products,

for Sanyo: development, manufacture and sale of consumer products, commercial equipment, electronic components (including batteries), industrial logistics/maintenance equipment.


On preliminary examination, the Commission finds that the notified transaction could fall within the scope of Regulation (EC) No 139/2004. However, the final decision on this point is reserved.


The Commission invites interested third parties to submit their possible observations on the proposed operation to the Commission.
