(C/2023/1572)
This communication is published in accordance with Article 17(5) of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/33 (1).
COMMUNICATING THE APPROVAL OF A STANDARD AMENDMENT
Crişana
PDO-RO-A0105-AM01
Date of communication: 12.10.2023
DESCRIPTION OF AND REASONS FOR THE APPROVED AMENDMENT
1. Introduction of new winemaking varieties for the production of wine bearing the Crișana DOC
New wine grape varieties for the production of still wine bearing the Crișana DOC, i.e. the Cadarcă, Cabernet Franc and Furmint varieties, have been added to the specification.
The varieties are designated for cultivation at national level by Order No 273/2020 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the areas in which they are cultivated in Bihor and Sălaj counties are recorded in the Register of Vineyards. Their inclusion in the specification is intended to diversify the range of quality wines obtained in the wine-growing region of Crișana and Maramureș, using native varieties, and increasing the proportion of quality wines consolidates the reputation of DOC Crișana wine thanks to the quality characteristics of the wines obtained from those varieties.
Chapter IV of the specification and point 7 of the single document have been amended.
2. Indication of the wine and vine yields for the new varieties requested for production
The specification has been amended to include the wine and vine yields for the new winemaking varieties requested, i.e. Cadarcă, Cabernet Franc and Furmint. The condition is indicated in order to ensure compliance with the legislation in force on designations of origin.
Chapters V and VI of the product specification and point 5.2 of the single document have been amended.
3. Presentation of product details – white and red wines
Details have been added to the chapter of the specification on the link between the area and the product that concern the characteristics of the white and red wines obtained in the Crișana DOC.
The specification needs to be supplemented with details of the product in order to ensure compliance with the legislation in force on controlled designations of origin, which provides that that information should be set out in the details of the link between the geographical area and the product.
Chapters II and XI of the product specification and point 4 of the single document have been amended.
4. Rewording of the labelling conditions
Certain conditions initially set out in the chapter on the demarcation of the area need to be transferred to the presentation/marketing conditions as they concern certain indications on the labelling of the wine using the names of smaller areas than the demarcated area of the PDO.
On the labelling of the wines, the CRIŞANA protected designation of origin may be supplemented, depending on the interests of the producers, by one of the following single vineyard names: BIHARIA, DIOSIG, SĂCUENI, SĂLARD, SÂNIOB, DEALUL ŞIMLEULUI, ZALĂU, ŞAMŞUD, SĂRMAŞAG.
Chapter III of the specification and point 9 of the single document have been amended.
5. Amendments concerning the indication of the geographical area
The demarcated production area of Crișana needs to be rectified and supplemented for reasons specifically relating to the national administrative reorganisation so that the indication of the production area for Crișana wines is demarcated in accordance with those administrative rules and in accordance with the national legislation on the national wine-growing area on the basis of which the specific areas for PDO/PGI wines are defined.
The rectification of the area demarcated for the production of DOC wines relates to the village of Vaida, which must be assigned administratively to the Roșiori municipality (Bihor county), because that municipality was established by Law No 140/2003 establishing the municipality of Roșiori through the reorganisation of the municipality of Diosig, with the villages of Roșiori, Mihai Bravu and Vaida being taken over from the municipality of Diosig in Bihor county.
The demarcated area of Crișana is also supplemented by the municipality of Roșiori, with the villages of Roșiori and Vaida, as an area for the production of PDO wine. The administrative organisation is established by clear rules and the municipality of Roșiori is designated as part of the national wine-growing area by Order No 1205/2018 of the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, as amended.
As the municipality of Ianca is now administratively incorporated into the municipality of Diosig, it must be excluded from the area demarcated for production indicated in the specification and it must be located correctly in the municipality of Diosig, which only has the village of Diosig.
Chapter III of the product specification and point 6 of the single document have been amended.

8. Description of the link(s)
8.1. Details of the geographical area
The Crișana region (Hungarian: Körösvidék; German: Kreischgebiet) is situated between the Mureș, Someș and Tisa rivers and the Apuseni mountains. The outermost points are: 20°45’ E (Nădlac in the west) and 22°39’ E (Târnăvița in the east) and 45°58’ N (Labașinț in the south) and 46°38’ N (Berechiu in the north).
The specific natural feature of the environment is the Crișul Repede river area, bounded on the north by the Șes mountain, gentle hills close to the plain and the influence of the Central European climate, causing a certain reduction in temperatures and increased rainfall variability. Winters in this area are milder, and wine-growing areas enjoy a significant amount of sunshine while being sheltered from winds and cold currents.
The significant decrease in rainfall in the months of August, September and October provides better conditions for heating of the soil and ensuring the maturation of the grapes, with a stronger foundation for the good phytosanitary health of the grapes. The notable decrease in the level of average air temperatures by 3 to 4 degrees C in September preserves those components of grapes that are sensitive to higher temperatures, such as aromas and acids.
Around Beltiug, Rătești and Ardud, growers constructed hundreds of cellars dug into the hill. These are arranged in two or three overlapping layers, such that entire hills appear to consist only of boxes, of which only the doors are visible. The cellars dug into the hillside are close to livestock markets and, once trading was over, the seller, who was also a grower, took the customer to his own cellar and offered him wine from his own harvest. Many traders also chose to trade at the market because of the impression the wine in the nearby cellars made on them. A trip to the market in Crișana was truly a wine tasting excursion.
8.2. Product details
The high acidity level of the soil has meant that white wines have predominated since the emergence of the Crișana DOC. The range of varieties has allowed for more diversity in obtaining coupages of indigenous white varieties such as Fetească regală, Fetească albă, Pinot gris and Mustoasă de Măderat, producing fruity wines with well-shaped primary aromas typical of the variety (Fetească regală from 50 % to 75 % in coupage).Well-regarded blends can also be obtained from the Burgund mare, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties. The wines are balanced, with good tannin structure, with an aroma of fresh fruit, with the specific velvetiness of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety, suitable for ageing in barrels.
8.3. Causal interaction between the area and the product
The name CRIȘANA is specific to the territory around the three rivers Crişul Alb, Crişul Repede and Crişul Negru: To the east, the area is demarcated by the Barcău river and, to the south, by the Mureș. The basin area of these three rivers has hilly intrusions and deep valleys. Autumn mornings in these valleys are foggy and damp, favouring the accumulation of fruity aromas in white grapes. The slopes of these hills, which are steeply inclined, and the soil – slightly skeletal alluvial, with limestone or brown podzol, resting on gravel which heats up quickly – allow the Fetească albă, Furmint and Muscat Ottonel grape varieties to mature well.
