We are

The Directorate-General for External Relations contributes to the formulation by the Commissioner for External Relations, together with her colleagues, of an effective and coherent external relations policy for the European Union, so as to enable the EU to assert its identity on the international scene. This work encompasses policies falling both within the Community competence and within the Common Foreign and Security Policy.

We propose

The post of Director involves responsibility for the long, medium and short-term policy ‘vision’ and policy analysis of the Commission in the field of external relations, as well as permanent coordination with other services of the DG and with other DGs of the Commission on all relevant policy matters. The Director will manage the central functions of strategic external policy planning, analysis and coordination, and of the inspection of external Delegations, for DG RELEX. The policies concerned are all those which concern or may affect the Union's external relations: trade, development, enlargement, environment, justice, liberty and security, health, employment, research, transport, economy and finance, etc.

Applicants must

1.

be a national of one of a European Union Member State;

2.

hold a university degree that gives access to undertake doctoral studies;

3.

have at least 15 years’ postgraduate professional experience at a level to which the qualifications referred to above give admission; at least five years of that professional experience must have been gained at senior management level;

4.

have a thorough knowledge of one of the EU official languages and an adequate knowledge of another of these languages. Candidates should note that the selection procedures will be carried out in English, French and German only.

The Director will be selected and appointed by the Commission according to its selection and recruitment procedures. Salaries and conditions of employment are those laid down in the Staff Regulations for AD 14 grade officials of the European Communities. The Commission applies an equal opportunities policy.
