HEALTH AND CONSUMER PROTECTION DIRECTORATE-GENERAL

We are
The Health and Consumer Protection Directorate-General (DG SANCO), and it is our goal, in the context of overall Commission objectives, to empower consumers, protect and improve human health, ensure food is safe and wholesome, protect the health of animals and plants, as well as promote the humane treatment of animals.
We look for
Candidates who have a thorough knowledge and experience of animal health and welfare policy issues, including their international aspect, as well as very good management skills to ensure effective planning and management of the Directorate's activities and resources. Therefore candidates should match the following profile and should have:

— |
proven management and organisation skills, in particular the ability to lead, motivate and develop a team of highly qualified professionals, |
|
— |
good understanding and excellent knowledge of the activities related to food safety in general and in particular as regards animal health and welfare issues, including management of animal disease outbreaks potentially leading to EU-wide epidemic crisis situations, |
|
— |
ability to work under pressure, |
|
— |
sound and in depth experience of managing and supervising activities in the field of animal health and welfare policy issues and related risk assessments, |
|
— |
the capacity to master technical aspects of animal health and welfare and operate effectively in a scientific area is required, |
|
— |
good knowledge of the European Union's international relations in the field of food safety and in particular with the international standard setting bodies, |
|
— |
ability to integrate a food safety vision with other policies of the DG, notably public health and consumer issues, |
|
— |
strong powers of communication and persuasion in promoting the Commission's approach towards animal health and food safety, |
|
— |
strong ability to negotiate at high level with Member States, third countries and international organisations, |
|
— |
knowledge of comitology procedures would be an advantage. |
Applicants must:

— |
hold a university degree that gives access to undertake doctoral studies, |
|
— |
have at least 15 years of postgraduate professional experience at a level to which the qualifications referred to above give admission, preferably in veterinary or life sciences (at least five years of that professional experience must have been gained at a high management level), |
|
— |
have a thorough knowledge of one of the official languages of the European Union and an adequate knowledge of another of these official languages, |
|
— |
be a national of a European Union Member State. |
Candidates should note that the selection procedures will be carried out in English, French and German only. Candidates should indicate the size (staff number) and nature of departments they previously managed.

Appointment and conditions of employment
The Director will be selected and appointed by the Commission according to its selection and recruitment procedures.
The remuneration and conditions of employment are those laid down in the Staff Regulations that are applicable to AD14 officials of the European Communities.
