4. Concise definition of the geographical area
The area covered by this indication comprises the municipalities of Castelldefels, Cornellà de Llobregat, El Prat de Llobregat, Gavà, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Climent de Llobregat, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Viladecans and Santa Coloma de Cervelló.
5. Link with the geographical area
The link between the product covered by the PGI and the demarcated area is based on the reputation of the chickens and capons of the Prat breed produced there, and specifically in the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat, which is the main production centre for the PGI. Thus, the breed of birds used is fully identified with the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat, after which the breed is named. Conversely, the inhabitants of the municipality owe their nickname to the breed, as they are known colloquially as pota blava, meaning ‘blue legs’, and pota blava is the name by which these birds are popularly known because they have slate blue legs.
The specific character of this protected geographical indication comes from the breed used, which is inextricably linked to the PGI area. The Prat breed, which is the only breed covered by the PGI, is indigenous to the district of Baix Llobregat, where the PGI production area is located. It is one of the most typical breeds of bird, highly valued for its qualities as a producer of eggs of a good size and pink colour, and particularly because of the delicate sweetness of its meat.
Beyond the origins of the breed used, its enduring presence in the farmhouses of the municipality of El Prat made it possible to preserve a breed which had been dominant during the first half of the 20th century but declined, along with traditional poultry farming, when hybrid breeds appeared. It is thanks to the great tenacity of the farmers and breeders of El Prat, who have continued to rear the chickens and capons of this breed and to market them and their eggs, that the fame and reputation of these birds have endured. The fact that the pota blava has become an icon of the area and is without doubt the main attraction of the Fira Avícola de la Raça Prat fair, which was held for the first time in 1941 and has been an annual event since 1975, is proof of this fame and significance.
That is why, in order to protect and preserve this production, the generic quality designation Pollastre i Capó de la Raça Prat was created in 1987 and subsequently entered as a PGI in the Community register in 1996. (Pollastre i capó means ‘chicken and capon’ in Catalan, since, due to the specific linguistic situation in Catalonia, this product may be referred to in either of the two languages used in the demarcated geographical area – Spanish and Catalan.)
