Initiative summary:
The Schengen evaluation mechanism is a key instrument to ensure the correct implementation and application of the Schengen acquis by the Member States concerned. After the first cycle of evaluations and in light of unprecedented challenges faced by the Schengen area since 2015, it is crucial to strengthen its evaluation mechanism to preserve a well-functioning Schengen area. The proposal seeks to increase the efficiency of the procedure and allow a more flexible, targeted use of the instrument.
