Pursuant to Article 50(2), point (a), of Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council (2), Spain’s application for registration of the geographical indication ‘Queso de Burgos’, which the Commission had received before the date of entry into force of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143, was published in the Official Journal of the European Union (3).

No statement of opposition under Article 17 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143, which is applicable to the application for registration in accordance with Article 90(2) of that Regulation, has been received by the Commission.

The geographical indication ‘Queso de Burgos’ should therefore be entered in the Union register of geographical indications.

By letters received on 25 March 2025 and 30 May 2025, the Spanish authorities requested the Commission to grant a transitional period of three years, in accordance with Article 20(1) of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143, in favour of several companies which are established outside the geographical area defined in the product specifications and which had legally marketed products under the name ‘Queso de Burgos’ and continuously used the name for more than five years prior to the date of publication of the application for registration of ‘Queso de Burgos’ (PGI) in the Official Journal of the European Union (i.e. 30 December 2024). The Commission was informed that this point had been raised in the context of the national opposition procedure.

Since the requirements laid down in Article 20(1), point (b), of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143, which are applicable to the application for registration in accordance with Article 90(2) of that Regulation, are met, a transitional period of three years should be granted to allow the companies in question to continue to use the name ‘Queso de Burgos’,
