Summary of the link
Ghemme’s origins date back to the Neolithic period, as evidenced by numerous discoveries there.
The hilly ridge running from north to south, resulting from the movement of the Monte Rosa glaciers, contains rocks and debris of various types and compositions, concealed by a clay surface which is deeper and more compact in the uplands, and looser and more pebbly along the western slope.
The moraine hills are rich in dissolved mineral salts, which, once absorbed by the vines, give flavour to the grapes and the resulting ‘Ghemme’ wine, to which is added the know-how of the producers acquired and passed down through millennia of winegrowing.
