New national sides of euro circulation coins

(C/2024/2261)

Euro circulation coins have legal tender status throughout the euro area. The Commission publishes all new euro coin designs (1) with a view to informing all parties required to handle coins in the course of their work as well as the public at large.

The French national sides of the regular 10, 20 and 50-cent euro coins are renewed for the first time since the introduction of the euro. This change complies with the conditions set out in Article 7(1) of Council Regulation (EU) No 729/2014 (2), which stipulates that changes to the designs used for the national sides of regular coins may only be made once every 15 years.

Description of the designs: After initiating the change of national designs with the 1€ and 2€ at the same time as the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2022, France continues the renewal of its national coin designs by changing the designs of its 10, 20 and 50-cent euro coins.

The designs feature the stylized portraits of Simone Veil, Joséphine Baker and Maie Curie, which are inserted in the centre of a French flag, symbolizing their iconic embodiment of the French Republic. Their names are superimposed in the centre of the coin. The year date, the RF mention and the mintmarks are inserted among the three colours of the flag.

The three coins' outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
