The agreement establishes a formal framework for cooperation between the European Community, now the European Union (EU), and Chile, aiming at encouraging, developing and facilitating activities in fields of science and technology of common interest.
By its decision, the Council approved the conclusion of the agreement on behalf of the European Community.

The agreement entered into force on for an initial period of 5 years and may be tacitly renewed after evaluation during the second-last year of each successive period. It has been most recently tacitly renewed in 2022 for an additional period of 5 years.
