Scientific and technological cooperation between the EU and Chile
SUMMARY OF:
WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE AGREEMENT AND THE DECISION?
The agreement establishes a formal framework for cooperation between the European Community, now the European Union (EU), and Chile, aiming at encouraging, developing and facilitating activities in fields of science and technology of common interest.
By its decision, the Council approved the conclusion of the agreement on behalf of the European Community.
KEY POINTS
Activities carried out under the agreement are based on the following principles:
- mutual benefit;
- reciprocal access to the activities of research and technological development carried out by each party;
- timely exchange of information;
- protection of intellectual property rights.
Cooperation
Cooperative activities may include:
- the participation of Chilean research and technological development entities in research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) projects of the framework programme and the reciprocal participation of EU-established research and technological development entities in Chilean projects in similar RTD sectors;
- the pooling of RTD projects already implemented;
- joint RTD projects under the framework of their respective scientific and technological policies;
- visits and exchanges of scientists and technical experts;
- the joint organisation of seminars, conferences, symposia and workshops, and the participation of experts in those activities;
- scientific networks and training of researchers;
- concerted actions for the dissemination of results and the exchange of experience on joint RTD projects;
- the exchange and sharing of equipment and materials, including the shared use of advanced research facilities;
- the exchange of information on practices, laws, regulations and programmes relevant to cooperation under this agreement.
DATE OF ENTRY INTO FORCE
The agreement entered into force on for an initial period of 5 years and may be tacitly renewed after evaluation during the second-last year of each successive period. It has been most recently tacitly renewed in 2022 for an additional period of 5 years.
