Specialised courts

The European Parliament and the Council may set up specialised courts attached to the General Court to hear and determine at first instance certain classes of action or proceeding brought in specific areas (Article 257 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU — TFEU).

The only specialised court to have been set up so far is the Civil Service Tribunal, which dealt with cases involving the EU institutions and its employees between 2005 and 2016. In 2016, this court was dissolved and its responsibilities transferred back to the General Court as part of the reform of the judicial architecture of the EU.
