Mensenrechten

Mensenrechten, democratie en de rechtsstaat zijn fundamentele waarden van de Europese Unie. Zij zijn vastgelegd in de oprichtingsverdragen en ook nog eens opgenomen in het Handvest van de grondrechten. Landen die lid willen worden van de EU moeten de mensenrechten respecteren. Dit geldt ook voor landen die handelsverdragen en andere overeenkomsten met de EU gesloten hebben.

De Europese Unie beschouwt de mensenrechten als universeel en ondeelbaar en heeft deze daarom actief gepromoot en verdedigd binnen haar grenzen en in haar betrekkingen met landen buiten de Unie. Tegelijkertijd wil de EU geen afbreuk doen aan de ruime bevoegdheden van de nationale regeringen van de lidstaten op dat gebied.

Het mensenrechtenbeleid van de Unie is vooral gericht op burgerlijke, politieke, economische, sociale en culturele rechten. Dat beleid moet ook de rechten van vrouwen en kinderen, en die van minderheden en ontheemden bevorderen.
