Short-term priorities:

Assessment (November 2003)

Medium-term priorities:

  • extra efforts for alignment with Community legislation, particularly in road and rail transport (market access, safety regulations and taxation);
  • mobilising the investment needed in the transport infrastructure (particularly in the extension of trans-European networks).

Limited progress has been recorded in the fields of carriage by road, air and rail transport and inland navigation.

In the railway sector, significant steps forward have been made regarding the future organisation of Slovak Railways. The legislation is in place for the establishment and efficient operation of an independent aviation accident investigation authority.

Following the signing of the Accession Treaty on 16 April 2003, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia acceded to the European Union on 1 May 2004.
