Stands for two-wheel vehicles

This Directive forms part of the harmonisation of national laws on EC type-approval for two or three-wheel vehicles. It lays down the rules applying to the design and production of stands used on this of vehicle.

Directive 2009/78/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 on stands for two-wheel motor vehicles (Text with EEA relevance).

SUMMARY

This Directive introduces the technical provisions necessary for the production and approval of stands for two-wheel motor vehicles. It falls within the scope of Directive 2002/24/EC relating to the type-approval of two or three-wheel motor vehicles.

This Directive applies to the following types of vehicle:

• mopeds: two- or three-wheeled vehicles fitted with an engine having a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3 and a maximum design speed of not more than 45 km/h;
• motorcycles: two-wheeled vehicles with or without a side-car, fitted with an engine having a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cm3 and/or a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h.

A stand is a device that is firmly attached to the vehicle and is able to maintain the vehicle in its vertical (or almost vertical) parking position when left unattended by its driver.

All two-wheeled vehicles must be fitted with at least one stand (prop, centre or both) to ensure that they are stable when stationary. Annex I to this Directive lays down the requirements for prop and centre stands.

Vehicles may also be fitted with a tell-tale indicating the position of the stand (retracted or travelling position).

Approval is granted according to the following procedure:

• the application for approval is submitted by the manufacturer or producer to the competent authority of a Member State;
• the competent authority grants approval for the stand if it complies with the requirements of this Directive and corresponds to the information provided by the producer;
• the competent authority then completes the approval certificate in Annex to the Directive.

This Directive repeals Directive 93/31/EEC. It applies with effect from 1 January 2010.
