The coupling device and the reverse of wheeled agricultural or forestry tractors

This Directive lays down the technical rules concerning the coupling device and the reverse of wheeled agricultural or forestry tractors, under the framework of the Directive on the procedures for EC type-approval of this type of vehicle.

ACT

Directive 2009/58/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 on the coupling device and the reverse of wheeled agricultural or forestry tractors (Codified version) (Text with EEA relevance).

SUMMARY

This Directive lays down technical prescriptions concerning the coupling device and the reverse of wheeled agricultural or forestry tractors.

Types of vehicles covered by the Directive

This Directive applies to agricultural or forestry tractors which are equipped with pneumatic tyres and have a maximum design speed of between 6 and 40 km/h.

These vehicles have the following characteristics:

  • they operate using wheels equipped with pneumatic tyres;
  • they have at least two axles;
  • they may be equipped to carry a load and passengers.

Tractors are principally used to tow, push, carry or power certain tools, machinery or trailers intended for agricultural or forestry use.

Coupling devices

Manufacturers are required to equip tractors with a special device to which it must be possible to attach a connection such as a tow-bar or a tow-rope for towing purposes. The device comprises a coupling pin and must be fitted to the front of the tractor.

Reversing devices

Manufacturers are required to equip tractors with a device for reversing which can be operated from the driving position.

Procedure for granting EC type-approval

The tractor manufacturer or his/her representative must submit an application for EC type-approval for coupling and reversing devices.

Member States may refuse the registration, sale or entry into service of new vehicles if they do not comply with the procedures for EC type-approval.

This Directive repeals Directive 79/533/EEC.
