Short-term priorities
Assessment (November 2000)
Little progress has been made on aligning veterinary and plant heath legislation and on improving frontier inspection posts. The vineyard register has not yet been completed.
Assessment (November 2001)
Good progress has been made on aligning veterinary legislation. Efforts still need to be made in the plant health sector and as regards the establishment of inspection posts at the external borders. There has been some preparatory work on drawing up the vineyard register.

Alignment has continued in the veterinary and plant heath sectors.

Assessment (November 2001)
Little progress has been recorded as regards the mechanisms and management structures of the common agricultural policy. The food processing industry must be restructured and inspection posts must be set up at the future external borders.
Assessment (October 2002)
Slovakia must make progress on strengthening its administrative capacities. Border control systems must also be set up and food processing centres upgraded. Slovakia must also introduce the integrated administration and control system.

Following the signing of the Accession Treaty on 16 April 2003, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia acceded to the European Union on 1 May 2004.
