Economic and monetary union (EMU)

Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) involves close coordination at European level of the economic policies in the EU countries, and requires them to avoid excessive budget deficits ("Stability and growth pact").

EMU has led to the introduction of a single currency: the euro.
